The training of a Schutzhund dog is a very structured system that has changed over the last century. Some people thought the process was somewhat inhumane. Even though the training is still very strict and rigid, it is no longer allowed to be abusive to the dogs.

The original training was based on a small number of manuals and organized courses. As it became more popular around the world, there has been much advancement in the availability of means for educating a dog owner to get started in Schutzhund Dog Training with videos and DVDs.

Some people don’t hold up their end when it comes to owning a pet. It needs to be a two-way street. You can’t expect a dog to magically become trained. Dogs bark for many reasons such as alerting you to something or someone, which is usually a good thing, but they also bark because of anxiety, boredom, and sometimes to just get attention. In this case, get your dog’s attention and try to redirect their attention on something else.

Biting on the other hand is a dangerous behavior that must be stopped early on. Playful biting is natural for a puppy but you must not encourage it. Aggressive biting is scary and can cause harm to others as well as being a liability to you.  The main reason a dog becomes aggressive goes back to the leadership role. If your dog believes that it is the dominant one, it is much more likely to bite.  Other reasons are fear, pain, and redirected aggression.

There are three main keys to bite prevention.  First of all, you need to understand why your dog is showing aggression. Next, you need to socialize your puppy early on so it gets used to a variety of situations. Last of all, it is important to teach the family to respect the fact that a dog is an animal and not a person with instincts that are innate.

One more issue to touch on with obedience training for dogs is leash training. If you are tired of having your dog pull you down the street, you have to stop the behavior. When your dog starts to pull, stop and don’t move again until it stops pulling or lunging.  Then you can reward your dog when it comes back to you and stops pulling.  Use a consistent signal that it is time to walk again.

Whether done by a professional or by the owner, obedience training for dogs sets the foundation going forward. Why Clicker Training Works

The idea behind clicker dog training is that it provides a way to communicate quickly with your pet. Your dog knows immediately that it achieved the desired behavior. When you give a specific command and your dog complies, you immediately click the device to mark the correct behavior.

There is a little more to it than that, though. Your dog first needs to understand that the clicker is a positive reward for a specific behavior. The clicker device itself is very inexpensive but you also need to have some sort of treat to give for reinforcement. You don’t want it to be a big snack, just a small nibble to tell your puppy they did a good job.

Using the clicker followed by a treat, you can provide precise timing and clear communication about what specific skill is being targeted allowing you to teach more difficult skills to your dog without the use of force or punishment. Plus, your dog will retain the ability to repeat the task for a long time because they are actively participating in the learning.

Steps to Clicker Dog Training

To begin training your dog to respond to a clicker, start with these basic steps. First, your puppy needs to understand that the clicker coincides with a reward. Start out by standing in front of your dog, click the clicker, and immediately give a treat so that the sound and the treat are simultaneous.

Practice this a few times and eventually try clicking when your dog is distracted. If you have your dog’s attention right away, you will know that it has made the connection.

Next, decide what you are going to teach your dog. You can train them to sit, shake, roll over, etc. Once you’ve gotten them to perform their behavior, mark it with the clicker and a reward. It will probably take several tries to master the task and be able to repeat it on command. Clicker dog training works well because it is a strong stimulus for positive reinforcement.

You need to keep in mind that after the initial connection, you will want to hide the reward until the behavior is performed. This will stop your pet from performing only when they know there is an obvious treat.  Plus, it will also help in weight control as your dog gets older.

Limit the clicker dog training sessions to 5 or 10 minutes to keep your dog from getting bored and distracted. Eventually, you won’t have to give a treat every time.  Giving lots of praise and petting your puppy will substitute perfectly because once respect is earned, your dog will be happy just pleasing you.

After enough repetition, your dog will respond to verbal commands only. Using other rewards such as toys or praise will reinforce the idea that there won’t always be food involved.  If you say the command, click, and reward repeatedly, your dog will begin to associate the three together but ultimately, you want your puppy to listen and follow spoken cues so that you can apply what they have learned anywhere.

Puppies do have an instinct to chew on whatever they can find so it isn’t fair to try to stop them from chewing altogether. One of the techniques commonly used when discovering how to stop dogs from biting is to startle your puppy when it misbehaves. When your puppy starts biting, say “No!” loudly and shake the can to startle him. As your puppy matures and becomes a rebellious teenager at around 2 years old, it still needs that same type of strong guidance in its leader.  If your dog is still nipping at you or your family, stop playing physical games with your puppy right away. You might have to remind them they aren’t in charge by taking away some of their privileges in the house. Give them boundaries and even revert back to crating them if necessary. Another big bonus for crate training is potty training. I dog will very rarely soil their sleeping quarters. Remember, though, that learning how to crate train a puppy doesn’t automatically mean that they are house broke.  You have to spend time with them, taking them out on a schedule.

Take them to the same spot and when they do their duty, praise them and enjoy some play time.  Then put them back in their crate for a nap. The time in between potty breaks can slowly be extended as they get older and have better control. By the time your puppy four months, it can wait up to five hours and can usually hold it all night.

Learning how to crate train a puppy is also very valuable if you don’t want them on the furniture.  If they are allowed to go in and out of their crate as they please, you will find many times that they will choose their puppy den for naps. Learning how to crate train a puppy is usually a win-win situation for both of you.

Steps for how to Crate Train a Puppy

If at all possible, you would ideally want to crate train your dog as a puppy since an adult dog has a harder time adjusting to being in a small area, especially if they previously had the run of the house. You have to start out with short bursts for even a puppy, but they are less likely to get upset if they’ve never known anything different.

To start with, you want to place the crate in a room where you can be close to the puppy like the family room. Put a towel or something soft in the bottom of the crate. Begin by introducing your puppy to the crate without the dog shut so he can explore without feeling trapped.  You could supply a toy to play with and make sure there is water available. It needs to be a positive experience for your puppy.

The size of the crate should be just big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and stretch.  Rather than buying several sizes as your puppy grows, you can get one big enough for when it’s full grown and then block off part of it so there’s not too much extra space so it can’t go potty in one end and then go to the other end to sleep.

The next step after your puppy becomes more comfortable with the crate is to start feeding it in the crate. If your dog is resistant to that, start by feeding it near the crate. Then move the food just inside the door and keep moving it farther back until it’s at the back of the crate. You can start shutting the door while it eats and then reopening it right away at first. Then, slowly lengthen the amount of time the puppy stays in the crate after it eats.

An important concept when discovering the best methods for how to crate train a puppy is to remember not to let your puppy’s sad cries get to you. If you give in to their fussing, it rewards them for their behavior and they will keep doing it. Wait until your puppy has quieted down again and after five or ten minutes, you can let them out.

If your puppy doesn’t stop whining, then it may have to go potty. Use the phrase that you say when you take him outside to go and if he gets more worked up, you probably need to take him out for a break.  If not, you need to be strong and ignore its whining.

As your puppy adjust even more, you can start leaving the room while it is in the kennel for short periods of time and then begin extending the amount of time before your return to the room.  Once they can handle about 30 minutes without you there, you can start leaving the house for short time periods, again building toward longer and longer amounts of time.

When you come home, try and act nonchalant so your puppy doesn’t become more anxious about when you will becoming home. Also, you can continue crating them while you are home so they don’t associate the crate with being alone in the house. If you learn how to crate train a puppy correctly, it will adapt quickly which is much less stressful for everyone in the house.

Specific Health Issues for your Dog

The first specific issue with dogs health problems is infection. Dogs can encounter a number of potential infections in their ears and eyes, on their skin, and their teeth. Ear infections are the probably the most common and are often due to a foreign object or bacteria. Certain dogs’ ears are like an incubator for nasty creatures like ear mites.

• You should check your dog’s ears frequently for red spots, swelling, excess moisture, or dirt. Infections are the easiest to prevent of all dog health problems. You need to clean your dog’s eyes, brush their teeth, and brush their hair regularly to steer clear of any possible bacteria build up.

• Another one of dogs health problems is allergies. The most common allergy is a flea allergy causing hot spots from itching that can lead to infection. Have your vet check your dog regularly to ensure their well being and get a flea medication to apply to your puppy approximately once a month. Dogs can also have food allergies which would need to be addressed by a veterinarian.

• If you notice your dog limping, having difficulty getting up, showing a reluctance to climb stairs and jump, you may need to get some treatment for your puppy. Causes for Aggressive Behavior in Dogs

Within three to six weeks after they are born, puppies begin to learn basic behavioral patterns specific to dogs. While they play, they experiment with different body postures, what it’s like to bite and be bitten as well as how to bark. Their mother teaches them how to behave and be submissive.

Starting at six weeks, it is crucial for puppies to be exposed to other dogs and people in a social setting since aggression can begin early. Puppies must be given the necessary training, first from its mother and then master, that keeps them from biting or hurting other people. This socialization period lasts until the dog turns 14 weeks of age but can extend beyond that if needed.

Accomplishing this means following some guidelines. First, never take a puppy away from its litter before it is 8 weeks old. Puppies removed from their mother and siblings too early tend to become nervous and shy and can be harder to discipline. They also tend to bark and bite more.

Socialize your dog early by getting it used to new sights and sounds. Introduce your puppy to new situations and be sure to immediately correct your dog if they growl or show any other aggressive behaviors by being firm and consistent, even if the aggression is brought on by fear.

If your dog is over 14 months of age and is still exhibiting aggressive behaviors, you need to address the problem immediately. Be sure and establish yourself as the pack leader with your puppy. It’s natural for dogs to exhibit posturing, biting, and other aggressive tendencies to test you for dominance, so train them to respond to your commands.

One way that prevents aggressive behavior in dogs is not allowing your puppy to sleep on your bed. This makes them think they are higher up in the pecking order. Even letting them on the furniture sends mixed messages. Another technique for training a well-mannered dog is to make them sit and wait before you feed them, and never let them go through a doorway ahead of you.

By establishing dominance at a young age and maintaining that position throughout the dog’s adolescence years, you will ensure your puppy doesn’t get a chance to take control of the household. If you give your young dog and inch, they will take a mile so keep a tight rein on them and don’t reward them for bad behavior, even when they are scared.

A dog that bites or threatens people is a dangerous dog, no matter how much you love him. If your dog’s behavior turns violent, be sure and keep it away from small children and consider hiring a professional to intervene before someone gets hurt. A well-trained, obedient dog is much happier and will be a wonderful companion for years to come.

Dachshunds originated in Germany and were used for badger hunting. Their name actually translates to Badger Dog.  Characteristics of fearlessness and perseverance, plus their odd shape, made them the perfect hunter to go down a badger hole and fight those vicious, sharp-clawed creatures.  You can see why Wiener dogs are genetically feisty and strong willed.

Dachshund puppies are very playful and fun and have a built-in propensity for chasing small animals. Without proper training, though, they can become quite obstinate and have been known to growl and bark at strangers and other dogs, even bigger dogs. Dachshund training requires lots of patience, firmness, and consistency to be successful.

Understanding Dachshunds

First of all, as humans, we tend to humanize our pets. You have to remember that even though your Dachshund is extremely cute, it is still a dog.  Dogs have a natural instinct to run in a pack.

Every pack has a pack leader and you need to make sure that your Dachshund considers you the alpha of your pack. Don’t think that just because they are small, you won’t lose the upper hand with them if you appear weak when attempting Dachshund training.

Next, most Dachshund breeds need lots of exercise.  When they are inside too much, they have pent up energy that can sometimes get them into trouble. They are also easily bored and can become destructive.

You don’t want to teach your Dachshund tricks that involve jumping and climbing because this puts a lot of stress on their back and joints.

The Basic of Dachshund Training

As mentioned earlier, even though Dachshunds are small dogs, they are bred as hunting dogs. They are full of energy and when they don’t get the chance to use to burn it off, it will come back to haunt you and your home.  Make sure you get your Dachshund as much exercise as possible from an early age.

The next tip to Dachshund training is to train in short bursts. If they get bored and decide they are not going to listen, you will have a hard time winning that battle.  Try and get as much accomplished as possible as quickly as you can and then take a break.

The first basic tricks you should teach your Dachshund are the simple ones such as “sit,” “stay,” and most especially “down.” Don’t allow them to jump or climb. You should always carry them up or down stairs and train them to stay off the furniture.  This needs to be reinforced as early as possible.

Clicker training works especially well in Dachshund training. Dachshunds have a keen sense of smell but are not known to have the best hearing.  They do respond well, though, to sharp, single sounds. Clicker training can be done in short sessions to match their attention span.

Due to their strong will, negative discipline is not very effective with a Dachshund. If you use excessive punishment, they will become more and more obstinate and possibly even get aggressive. Instead, use positive reinforcement to reward good behaviors. Small treats and physical attention work well with Dachshund training.

Along with these ideas, crate training is also an important key to house training your Dachshund puppy.  They feel safe and secure in their doggy bedroom which makes them easier to work with.  A happy, healthy puppy is more fun and less likely to be aggressive.

There is nothing simple or easy about Dachshund training. Be firm and don’t give in because as soon as you do, you lose the battle and it can be hard to regain that ground as the dog gets older. Just remember that it takes time and lot s of energy along with a great deal of patience to be successful in your training goals.

THE SOCIAL UNIT

Dogs don’t purposely want to upset you by being naughty.  It is just in their nature to explore, to be protective of their territory, and to generally be playful and fun-loving.  It’s your job to take charge and draw the boundaries so your dog can just relax and enjoying being a dog.

Dog owners have to come to the realization that dogs don’t think like humans.  You can dress them up in cute outfits and treat them like a child, but they are still a dog that thinks in terms of being part of a pack.

Their ranking within their pack and desire to be dominant is what drives their behavior.  To train your dog properly, you must make them understand that you are the one in control of your household.

Concepts such as being firm with commands, reprimanding fairly and quickly, and properly leash training your dog to follow your lead help establish you as the pack leader. Even something as simple as always walking into a doorway first and making your dog wait to come in factors into you position as alpha as far as your dog is concerned. The more consistent you are in how you train your dog, the happier you will both be.

SOCIALIZING YOUR PUPPY

As soon as they can open their eyes and start to move around, puppies begin to learn social skills. They play with their siblings and mock fight to practice for their role as an adult dog. Once adopted, depending on how you train your dog to understand his position in the pack, you will have a big impact on their personality.

By giving them structure, you help them to understand their role in the pack which decreases the incidence of aggressive behavior. If you allow your dog to interact with other dogs and people regularly, this will teach them to “share” and “play nice.”  Doggy parks are a great opportunity to socialize your dog in a controlled setting.

All of the members of your family/pack must understand the importance of following the rules for consistency with your puppy. You must begin to train your dog from the get-go and nip all aggressive tendencies in the bud. This allows your little buddy to relax and enjoy their world as opposed to being confused and unsure where they fit in.
